Why scan a QR before you print

A QR code that looks sharp on a laptop can still fail on a 3.5 by 2 card, a gloss flyer, or a yard sign viewed from the curb. CheapFAST Printing prints these marks every week. We built this scanner so you can drop the same file we would send to press and get a readable or not-readable answer, plus the purpose encoded in the payload. That stops a reprint when the code points at a dead page, a Wi-Fi string, or nothing at all.

We have already run thousands of these checks on everyday customer jobs: taco-shop menus, church donate cards, realtor yard signs, salon Instagram cards, campaign stickers, and hotel rack cards. The file that looks finished is the one that most often fails. Scan it here in the same minute you would have sent it to press.

AI-generated QR codes do not work

People paste a prompt into an image AI, get a beautiful card or flyer, and believe the QR in the corner is live. It is not. The model is drawing a mockup of a final design. It never builds the black-and-white modules that a camera can decode. There is no URL inside. There is no vCard. There is no Wi-Fi string. There is only a pattern that looks like a code from across the room.

On the jobs that reach CheapFAST Printing, that pattern is consistent: 100% of the AI-generated designs that include a QR fail this scan. ChatGPT image tools, Midjourney, Copilot Designer, and similar generators do the same thing. They are art tools. They are not QR generators. The square is set decoration, the same way a movie prop phone has a painted screen.

We date that claim. As of September 2026, the 100% still holds. The generators keep changing. If a later model starts writing a payload a phone can read, this scanner will say Readable and we will print that file as-is. Until then, do not trust the painted square. Upon request only, we can insert a working QR on the same design completely free of charge.

That is why we keep this tool next to press. You drop the AI PNG or the PDF export. The scanner says not readable. If you ask, we do the useful part for free: we generate a real QR for the destination you actually want and mount it on top of the current square so the rest of the design stays yours. Upon request only. We do not add a new code unless you ask. We do not apply the 0.8 inch size rule on that update. That rule is for designs we create from scratch.

Use cases we see every week

• Restaurant or food-truck menu card. The AI drew a taco shop card with a cute square. Guests tap and nothing happens. Upon request, we mount a real menu URL on the current square. We do not resize it to the 0.8 inch from-scratch rule.
• Church or nonprofit donate flyer. A painted QR does not open the giving page. A real donate code, large enough for a parking-lot phone, does.
• Realtor or contractor yard sign. Curb distance is harder than a card. An AI square still fails. Upon request we mount a real listing code on the current square. We do not apply the from-scratch 0.8 inch size rule on that update.
• Salon, gym, or shop Instagram card. The AI profile QR is decoration. We encode the live profile or booking link and drop it on the same corner.
• Campaign sticker or rally card. A mockup code wastes a whole print run. Scan first, mount a real action URL, then print.
• Hotel rack card or event program. Guests will not debug a pretty square. They will skip it. A readable 0.8 inch code earns the tap.

How the scanner studies your file

Images and PDFs stay in your browser. We rasterize each PDF page, then try several reads: normal, inverted (light-on-dark), contrast boost, and a closer crop if the mark is small on a large sheet. Word and PowerPoint files are opened as ZIP packages so we can scan the pictures stored inside. If the QR was drawn as lines instead of a picture, export that page to PDF or photograph the printed piece and scan that instead.

Instant scan does not send the file to CheapFAST Printing. Use the File Uploader path if you want a person to test the same code under coating, UV, or outdoor light.

What "readable" means here

Readable means a current phone camera can decode the payload from the pixels in your file. That is the same first check we run in prepress. It is not a promise that a tiny mark will scan from a moving car. After a readable result, still judge size against the product if you are placing a new mark. When we create a design from scratch, we keep printed codes at least 0.8 inch wide and 0.8 inch tall, plus quiet space. When we update a QR on your existing design, we mount on the current square and we do not check that size rule.

Not readable means we found no decodable QR, or we saw a QR-like square that would not unlock. The most common cause now is an AI mockup. Other causes are blur, low contrast on a colored background, a logo that ate the center, a crop that cut a finder square, or a screenshot saved too small. Fix the file yourself, or ask us to mount a real code (upon request only), then scan again before you approve the proof.

Purposes we name after a successful decode

• Website URL for menus, listings, and donate pages
• Email, phone, or SMS so a tap starts a message
• Wi-Fi network join strings
• Contact cards (vCard or MECARD)
• Calendar events, map locations, and authenticator / 2FA links
• Payment URIs and plain text when nothing else matches

We show the raw payload so you can copy it. We do not open the link for you. Confirm the address yourself. A pretty code that hides a wrong domain wastes the print run.

We replace the fake QR for free, upon request only

This mount is upon request only. We do not replace a QR just because a file arrived. Choose We will do it for you, or send the file through the File Uploader and ask us to mount a real QR on the AI mockup. Tell us the real destination: menu, donate page, listing, booking link, vCard, or Wi-Fi. We generate a working code and mount it on top of the current square. The rest of your design stays. We do not apply the 0.8 inch size rule on a customer-file update. Then we scan the new file again so you see Readable plus the purpose before press. As of September 2026 we still do this when you ask. If a future generator starts making a real code, scan first and skip the mount. Until then the insert is completely free of charge, upon request only.

After the scan

If the code is readable and the purpose is right, keep going: place it in Online Designer or your PDF, leave quiet space, and check bleed with our guideline templates. Need a new mark?
